Arrow Ray Mitzel, who worked at Stonehouse, sent in a short document from 1965 entitled "Welcome to Kagnew Station (Adobe PDF)." COL Keene Wilson was Kagnew CO. Interesting reading.

Arrow National Congress of Parents and Teachers (PTA) Membership card for Sgt. Odell and Mrs. Ann Jackson from 1964. Another new item I've never seen before.

Arrow Found my orders to leave Asmara (Adobe PDF) the other day. Note that the orders do not give a date for me to leave Asmara but I have authorized 30 days leave and I have to report no later than 1 August, 1974 so I must have left Asmara on 1 July, 1974. I know there were only a handful of military left when I left with 12 others, leaving what I would guess to be less than 100, not counting the civilians and the Marines that had arrived to protect the Embassy.
Sent in by Dan Carr

Arrow Oasis Club free drink card from Dwight Gibson.

Arrow Ed White sent in an article from the March 1970 copy of The Hallmark entitled "The Adventuresome Tour."

Arrow "Massawa Letters" penned by RADM Edward Ellsberg in 1942. It is a very intersting insight into life at the Massawa Naval Base during WWII.
Sent in by Dave Engstrom

Arrow I just purchased a document I've never seen before. It is an "Employee or Contractor Temporary Pass" to Kagnew Station, issued to an Eritrean in 1962. If you recognize the NCOs on this pass please email me -- Rick.

Arrow Donald E. Jaster ASA Certificate of Achievement, August 3, 1961.

Arrow Thanks to Terry Hicks for sending in a link which searches the National Archives for documents related to Kagnew Station. Recently, more documents have been de-classified and it is very interesting reading these, although most are very short. It sadly, defintiely maps out the end of Kagnew.

After you select "View Records" for a category, select the drop-down for "Results for Page" and change it to 50. It will take a bit longer to retrieve the documents, but you won't have as many pages to retrieve--Rick.

Arrow This doesn't have anything to do with Kagnew, but Joe Wilder sent in a very interesting Ethiopian document. It is Haile Selassie's Mobilization Order after the Italian invasion of 1935. If you ever thought the US draft was unfair, pay close attention to the last line of this order!

Arrow Richard Kostbar, NavCommUnit 3 57-58 sent in a church bulletin from the Catholic services.

Arrow I have stumbled onto some declassified documents from the State Department that give us a lot of information about the high-level conversations about Kagnew. I will add an entire page devoted to these memorandums and add documents to it as I find time. This is very interesting reading so I will be bumping the priority up on ths venture.

Kagnew Station Memorandums

Arrow I was able to purchase a very good copy of "Today" from March 1967, which was the AFRTS Program Guide and here it is, enjoy!

Arrow From dependent Bob Morris: I have a little diploma, about the size of a 4x6 index card, certifying to my "graduation" from eighth grade on 13 June 1962. My chief memory of that evening is of the misery of having to don a coat and tie.

Arrow Dean Tiernan has sent in copies of an Eritrean province "Title Certificate Book" for his motorcycle.

Arrow Bonnie Peckinpaugh has sent in some documents that she and her husband Gene Peckinpaugh acquired during their tours at Kagnew.

Arrow Linda Caudell-Feagan, our resident reunion committe dependent has been going through some boxes and came up with a great find! It's the September 1972 issue of the ASA publication, "The Hallmark." This contained the article "ASA Leaves Kagnew" and was written by CPT John Rasmuson, and researched by SP5 Joe DiVeglia (currently on roster) and SP5 John Ryan. It's a great article and has an outstanding aerial view of Kagnew Station from over the housing.

The files are a little on the large side but reducing them in size would have taken away some of the impact of seeing them. Larger is better!

Arrow The "Handbook of Eritrea" was handed out to Asmara veterans at Radio Marina. Jerry Pry has sent in his copy of the handbook which was printed in 1951. You can now view that book here and even download the pictures if you'd like to print them for a copy yourself.

Arrow Joe Ewing of STRATCOM has provided the Kagnew page with a rare copy of "Ethiopia, The Hidden Empire." This magazine was published by Ethiopian Airlines in Italy in March 1972, and is full of information and pictures about Ethiopia. He also sent in an Army Digest from September, 1970 which has a great article about the communications efforts of STRATCOM.
