Reed of the Pistons won his fifth of the season last night as a 14 hit attach swamped the Tars of Navy. Bush (3-3) took the loss. Carullo led the Piston attach with two singles and a home run in four trips while Smith of the Pistons collected a triple and a single for four. The Tars scattered five hits. Spoilers 9-5-3, Hawks 5-9-2. Bradshaw struck out nine as he chalked up his sixth win against no losses for the Spoilers. McDaniels (0-1) took the loss. Once again the Spoilers were out hit by their opponents, but managed to take home the win. Craig and Springer led the Hawks with two for four as the Spoilers scattered five hits. CAPE CANAVERAL... The United States successfully launched a three stage second generation Minuteman which can span 6,300 miles in less time than a man can shave. In its initial test the rocket, trailing bright orange flame, traveled more than 4,000 miles. Under present Air Force plans 450 of the easily manufacturable Minutemen will be buried in underground silos across the northern states and another 150 will be on special railroad cars by 1964. RECIFE... The anxious passengers of the rebel seized Portuguese liner Santa Maria came ashore at the Brazilian port city of Recife yesterday after nearly 12 days of captivity at sea. A great mob of people watched the liner drop anchor off shore at noon in Brazil yesterday. An hour later tug boats began carrying nearly 600 passengers ashore. The Brazilian government has not announced what is to be done with the liner and the rate of the rebel crew is still in doubt. VIENTIAME... The Fledgling Air Force of the Laosian government has grown to seven with the arrival of two additional United States delivered World War II single engine armed trainers. The U.S. earlier announced its intention to deliver 10 of the prop driven trainer-fighters in order to have four in operational condition. CHICAGO... Biting cold stung the Northeast quarter of the United States yesterday as the winter's longest seige of severe weather showed no signs of a general break. Record low readings were recorded in some estern cities as the cold wave moved into the third week. New York city, shivering in zero weather, suffered its coldest day in eighteen years.
