by L. Shapiro The Kagnew Duplicate Bridge Club has finally received the American Contract Bridge League sanction requested two months ago. This means that coveted Master Points in bridge competition can now be awarded here. Last week we had ten tables (40 persons) participating, and we started a four-week series. The over-all winners will receive a nice prize. Thursday night's winners were: North-South, first, Dr. Nissimov and myself; second, Mike McClam and Bruno Corralas, and third, Mr. and Mrs. Walker; East-West, first, Miss Sehumaker and Mr. Wolford; second, Rich Goodman and Gil Philips, and third, Ware and Thomas. First place winners receive five points toward the grand prize; second place gets three |
points and third place, one
point. Remember, this is a four-week contest, and even if you didn't do
well last week, you have plenty of time to catch up to the leaders. The winning play of the four spade hand last week is winning the club opening. Three trump leads and the next high club leave you open to trump the last club. Now lead the Ace, King and other heart, end playing whichever opponent has the heart Queen. If he leads a diamond, his best lead, duck in the second and lose two diamonds and the one heart trick already lost. In the event of a club lead, discard a diamond in one hand and trump in the other, losing the same tricks. Holding the diamond losses to two is the key to this hand. The only way to do this is to force your opponent to lead diamonds for you. |
