Looking for anyone that might remember me. Worked ASA Computer Repair (34D20) on night shift. For Captain Benny. Never left me in computer room. in the 7 months I was there. June of 71 to January 72. I rebuilt an Engish Ford to drive and had just picked up a 1965 Mustang Fastback 289 with 4 speed to rebuild. Had to sell both when shipped out to Sinop Tuslog Det 4 for the last year of my tour with ASA.

Stationed there from 1959 thru 1962 with my Dad-spent many vacations at Karen; once at Massawa. We would be bused to the Officers Club for lunch-there was no cafeteria at the school; was built while we were there-ate lunch there our last day of school before coming back to the states. I remember the outdoor movie theatre with the bench seats on Track A; very memorable 3 years

Attended AAHS from 1967-1968 (7th and 8th grades). What fantastic memories! Snorkeling at Massawa R&R Center, boyscout trip to Lake Awasa (sleeping in tents were curtailed when 14 foot boas showed themselves!).
Trips to Axum and Keren were truly an adventure. Lived on the economy and then moved to Track A. The highlight was playing a triumphant march number (trumpet) in the school band for HIM Haile Selassie when he visited the base (he got his dental work done there I am told!).

Someone I know said there was a water shortage at Kagnew Station during their duty there, 1969-1970. Can anyone confirm that?

Darlene...In 1970, my last year, we had water pressure for about 30-45 minutes mornings and nights. As Terry Hicks mentions above, toilets were nasty! Had to fill barrels to flush, canteens to brush our teeth, and we found out you can take a shower in about a minute....Rick

Was stationed there '61 thru '63 as an 058.
Can't imagine a better duty station. Had many great trips to Keren and Massawa. I remember driving my old Bianchi down the road to Massawa, starting out above the clouds and driving through them to get to sea level.
The Asmarans were very generous people. They didn't have much but we're happy to share what they had with you.
Spent too many nights at the Oasis Club. Happy hour was a blur.

Just checking in , to update e-mail and location info from my previous guestbook entry of ten years ago. Even though I don't visit it as often as I used to, my comments in the "sponsor thank-you" page are just as valid today as they were when I wrote them many years ago -- perhaps even more so because it's just nothing short of amazing that the sponsors and the webmaster (Rick Fortney) are still dedicating so much of their time and treasure to keeping this site relevant, reverent, and refreshing!
Saying "Thank you" is shamefully inadequate, but completely sincere.

Was at Kagnew from July 1960 to Feb 1962. An MP. Did all the jobs Front gate, rear gate, town patrol, guardhouse, and many other jobs. I was a sports guy played all available. Enjoyed Asmara and the surrounding area. What an experience over fifty years ago for a 20 year old. If anyone remembers me send an e-mail. This is a great website. To all who served and are now serving God Bless.

Was stationed at Kagnew as a little girl with my family in 58-62...I did see the map of the layout. I went to grade school on post and remember having the summers trying to do all the military had for summer vacation set up for the kids and we bowled, swam, did archery and we had camel and elephant rides on the parade grounds. We had a movie theater and paid 4 cents Ethi to go. Mother and father went to the NCO club. I have photos of this place. I have looked at all the photos taken since I was hasn't changed much except for the post. We always had beautiful flowers around our BOQ like living quarters. My father was a hunter and really enjoyed hunting. I went along as well. We vacationed in Massawa, what a drive! Was a great experience for an Army Brat. Thank you for this site. My father was MSG Earl K Davis and worked in the motor pool.

Greetings to anyone out there that was part of the Hospital group between 1970 and 1973. I was in Medical Supply during that period right beside the MP office. My wife, Marsha was with me and is still with me 43 years later. We have many fond and interesting memories of Kagnew Station.

I was at Kagnew Fire Dept in the early '60's when the fire station was just inside the main gate next to the P.O. and PX. Left Asmara for Ft. Rucker. E6 Mervin White was our station Sargent. Sam Mace was there at the same time. We both were from Harford County MD. I went to Massawa regularly for a fire inspection at the hotel.
