Ethiopia
A Hidden Empire of Active
Recreation and Recuperation

Thanks to Ethiopia's use of the Julian calendar, you are automatically seven years younger the moment you arrive there! And, in addition, it offers many opportunities for active recreation and recuperation that help you feel, and stay, even younger.
Ethiopia's climate is not only uniquely mild in Africa, it is also uniquely healthy-requiring only the most obvious health precautions before and during your visit.
Mineral springs abound, many providing the delicious tablewaters you can enjoy wherever you go; others, the, site of therapeutic centres for circulatory and cardiac, rheumatic and allied complaints, and offering facilities for skilled medical attention in addition to hydro and physiotherapy.
There are opportunities for almost every kind of land and water sports: riding, trekking, tennis, golf, yachting, fishing, swimming, skin-diving and underwater fishing.
A departure point for exciting safaris is Gambela, on the River Baro: a remote, unspoiled village where the people pursue their peaceful agricultural life in the midst of country abounding in rare game.
Trekking and riding, whether on mule or horseback, can be enjoyed almost everywhere, though the highbacked Ethiopian saddle at first takes a little getting used to! But once accustomed to it, there is little to be compared with a spirited canter over the prairies of the Simian Mountains.
Golf courses and tennis courts are to be found in many places, especially the larger towns, and many hotels have Olympic-size swimming pools, inviting you to take a dip at the beginning and end of your sightseeing day.
The lover of water-sports has much to discover in Ethiopia. In addition to her innumerable lakes and crater-lakes, where you can enjoy boating; fishing and, in certain of them, swimming and water-skiing, she has her splendid 544 miles of Red Sea coastline, their main features for the visitor being Massawa and the incomparable coral-reef islands of the Dahlac Archipelago.
Here, the main joys are those of skin and scuba-diving; sea-urchins; swordfish and pilchards are amongst the myriad darting, flashing marine creatures caught in the shallow, translucent waters within the safety of the coral barriers while beyond are barracuda, sailfish, shark, tuna and other favourites of the deep sea fisherman.
