61-62. I was sent to Teheran, Detachment Two receiver site. It was great. We lived in a home in the diplomatic neighborhood. The neighbors weren't too happy with our parties, but we kept the gendarmes happy by giving them C ration cigs.

Hello to all those who served at Radio Marina and later kagnew Station.
I was there 1953-1957, worked at site, down in Crypto room. Anyone there during that time can contact me at above e mail address. I know a few people who were there during my time (or part of my time) but the number is getting smaller. Best wishes to all. George M.

Flew MAC support for Kagnew Staion in August 1969. Remember drinking 10 cent Salty Dogs in the NCO club and listening to the Shifty Kickers country band.

I was station at Kagnew from Dec 1965 to May 1966. I was looking at my pictures of Kagnew and Asmara. I only wish I would have taken more of Kagnew itself. I lost all my addresses of my friends when I got home. If any one remembers me please drop me a e-mail. HAPPY NEW YEARS TO EVERYONE. I will always remember those good times.

TRIVIA: 058 became 05H in around early 1966, then became 98H in early 1980s. It is in the Army 98 career management field. "H" stood for the knick-name of "hogs." MOS is still alive and well, and currently being taught at Fort Huachuca, AZ.

I was stationed at Kagnew Station in 1961-1963 MOS 058. Great duty station and great people. Rode motorcycles with last one being a red BSA 650cc Super Rocket. Met a beautiful Armenian girl there and married her in New York. Just found old friend named Joy Jurs on this site. We just talked for an hour about old times. Thanks for this website. Looking for more old friends: Roland from Nebraska who played the banjo, Charles Dale from Kentucky and Larry Hansen from California and many others I can't remember.

I was an 058 in Asmara during 1960 61 and 62, did a lot of motorcycle riding to Massawa and back. Remember the names of a few guys. Bob Jordan from #@*%!, Bill Coffee from Kansas City, also I believe a fellow who's last name was Barker and a guy named Bush. If anyone remembers me, give me a shout.

I was Navy RM3/2 from 2/60 to 5/62. Worked at Receiver sites. Did everything from ship/shore to crypto. Helped to put Special Projects together. 2 days back in the USA, got stopped for driving on the wrong side of the road. Let off with a warning. Anyone out there that remembers me, it would be great to here from you.

Hey, Jughead, how did you like Asmara? Better than Oki? If anyone knew a 058 named Pauly in 65- drop me a line, if you would. No, I don't remember his first name. He got christened "Jughead" about the first day that he hit ops because of his resemblance to the comic book character and it stuck.

Hello to all those who served in Asmara. I was there from July 1953 until July 1957 at the old Radio Marina site; New post was just constructed when i departed. I worked at the receiver, in the basement in Crypto. I am in contact a few people who served there during my tour. Be glad to hear from anyone who was there. 2014 coming to a close so wish all of you a Blessed Christmas and a New Year 2015 filled with health, hope, and happiness. George M.

I was stationed at Kagnew Station from Jun 1968 to Dec 1969. I worked at Tract "C". My MOS was "41J20" which was "Office Machine Repairman". I tried to keep the ditty boppers in supply of the "mills" that they treated so roughly.
My wife and I lived off post just outside the back gate of Kagnew Station. Our oldest son was born at the base hospital. We had some fun times there and met up with friends at the "Oasis Club". I tried to extend my tour there but that was not to be. I stayed stateside for a few months at Ft. Devens, Mass. before getting orders for Phu Bai in Viet Nam. I spent my last year in the Army there at the "8th Radio Research Field Station" from Jul 1970 to Jul 1971.
I am going to try to see if I can find some pictures to post of both locations. The only problem is that it has been 40+ years since I took those pictures. They have surely faded as has this old mind I have left.

I'm so excited to find this site. Reading the comments brings back so many memories. We lived on and off the base from 1962-1964. My father, SMJ Alto (Will) Williams was in the Signal Corps. I remember him being assigned to escort Haile Sellasie during a parade they had for him on the base. I went to 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on the base. I have a brother two years older - Craig, and we had a younger sister named Cinda. I remember the wonderful trips to Keren and Massawa. If any of our family road trips involved travelling downhill on a winding road one of us would inevitibly say, "feels like going to Massawa". I look forward to reconnecting with people who may have been stationed there during that same time.

I have a special connection with Kagnew - I was born there in 1969! My parents, a teacher and an electrician, were working at the mission hospital and school in Gheleb. (They also spent a lot of time in Keren.) My mum had high blood pressure when my brother was born so the midwife at the hosptal in Gheleb advised that it would be better for her to give birth in a larger hospital, and the staff at Kagnew agreed to help out. A friend drove them through the night from Keren to Kagnew. I was born about 6.5 hours later. The Doctor who delivered me was Major Allen Killam. He is named on the 'Certificate of Birth' as 'Commanding Officer', but I can't find him on the website. My mum was given an epidural. These were not used in Britain at the time, so as a result of being born at Kagnew, I was one of the first ever British babies to be born following an epidural! Thanks for putting this website together - for the first time in my life I know what the building I was born in looks like!

I spent 2 years in Asmara from 1971 to 1973. I was a 31j20, teletype maims. And repair. I raced motorcycles outside our site, was on the army softball team, and the post team. I also traveled to Turkey with the post tennis team. I had the experience of traveling to Axim, Gondar, and inland to the Blue Nile Falls. I was the guest of honor at an Ethopian wedding, meaning I was the chauffeur. I had some wonderful times at Massaua, and had Asmarits a number of times. I really liked the people of Asmara, and enjoyed their friendship and hospitality.

Thank You for maintaining this website! My father (Albert aka Bay Philbrick) was stationed here from 1960 to 1964 - my childhood years of 5 to 9.
Fifty years later I'm researching the area and come across this website! The minute I saw the Front Gate, a flood of memories returned - all good! I wish my father were still alive to enjoy this and perhaps reconnect with some of his old buddies.
My sister has many of the old photos from our stay there and I'll try and scan them for everyone to enjoy.

My father was there in 58-60, I believe...but I do know that he served with Larry Larson, Frank Garner & Larry Freeman. I have met 2 of these gentleman and sad to say was on 3 weeks away from a reunion for my dad John Taylor, when Mr. Freeman passed away. I would love to get in contact with Larry (Uncle Larson) Larson. Also, Jim Garner.

I was 13 when my dad (Air Force) was stationed there ('63-'64) . We had to live off-base as there were no AF housing billets. We lived in an Italian villa just outside the Navy billets. Looking through the pictures brought back a lot of memories-both good and bad. I was at the ball park watching the Army and Air Force softball teams play when someone came running up yelling that Kennedy was shot. The #@*%! went silent, it was called and everyone went home not saying a single word. Very eerie. A good memory was my mom having her own show on the Radio Station - "Notes and Notions". Played music, interviewed prominent people on base and gave announcements about things happening on base. Over all- great times for a new teenager.
